My name is: Ann Perry

Comments about the web site: To all of you who are experiencing the torment of NF, Please know that as terrible as it is, IT CAN BE BEATEN! My brother Grant was diagnosed with NF on June 3, 1998. He immediately went into surgery for a very radical debridement under his arm. He was given a 10% chance of living! He had 16 IV lines connected to him, full respiration, kidney dialysis and full blood transfusions. He was loaded with drugs that would keep him motionless. He needed every ounce of energy just to survive. He was on full life support for over 2 months. We watched his hands and feet turn black and we were prepared for amputatiions. They said his liver was gone and that he would require a full kidney transplant. He had lost 70% of his oxygen to his brain for over 20 minutes. We were told 2 1/2 weeks into it that he only had 5-30 minutes left to live and he would go into a massive heart attack and die. We agreed not to recessutate after learning that his brain was damaged. We went a full day grieving his death only to find out he was still alive! His white blood cells had declared war and were killing each other off. He was on MASSIVE amounts of antibiotics to kill the sepsis (blood poisoning) which was a complication of the NF and toxic shock he was in. We were never given any hope. Then 11 weeks into it his heart stopped 3 times in one day. Not a good sign. He had an awful brain seizure which went for over 4 minutes. His MRI showed what was described as the WORST MRI the head neurologist had seen ever! 24 hours later Grant woke up and started to ask very intelligent questions! He was not brain damaged at all! He soon left the trauma unit and is now home recovering as we speak! In fact he's going on a vacation to Jamaica next week for 2 1/2 weeks! If he can make it through all of that...ANYONE CAN MAKE IT AND WILL! The key is early diagnosis and DON'T EVER EVER GIVE UP! THE DOCTORS ARE USUALLY VERY GOOD, BUT ULTIMATELY THEY DON'T KNOW WHEN OR IF A PERSON WILL DIE... AFTER ALL, IT'S NOT UP TO THEM! Grant's story is now being written up in the NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL OF MEDICINE as a MIRACLE! His brain is fine, he had no amputations, his kidneys recovered beautifully and he's gaining new strength every day! NEVER STOP BELIEVING IN THE HUMAN SPIRIT! It's strong! He says that even while he was in his coma, he knew we all loved him and were out there waiting for him and ultimately we needed him! I welcome anyone to write who might need a little encouragement or just to share your story. Having been there and done that...maybe I can help in some small way. Ann :-)))

Comments about the web site: It is good to see that awareness in the States is being increased, but this is not yet the case in the UK, most people look at you blank when you tell them you have had necrotising fasciitis. I was lucky to have a consultant who had seen the bacterial infection before, however I was still not diagnosed for two weeks, despite being unable to walk, and displaying numerous other classic symptoms. I was infected with Strep B following the birth of my son and was cleared with two debridement operations, a blood transfusion and three months of antibiotics. It was a very frightening experience, but I will be eternally grateful to my friends and family for their support and love. Also thanks to Suzanne Pender and Don Morris in Boston MA for their knowledge and advise. Not the ideal start with a new baby, but nearly seven months down the line and I am physically fine, but still coming to terms mentally with what has happened to me.

Comments about the web site: What incredible entries I'm reading! It never gets easier for me to read new cases of NF, but I am really touched to know that survivors and families of those who have died are reaching out to each other. I'd like to remind people who filled out the Research Questionnaire to PLEASE sign and return the permission forms to Dr. Bisno. Without them, we cannot research your medical records and include your information in our study. Please be assured that your privacy will not be violated in any way! If you have questions, E-Mail me at jroemmele@aol.com, and I'll be happy to answer them for you. This study is so very important!!! As you know reading this guestbook, there is case after unnecessary case of misdiagnosis, leading to death or severe disfigurement. With your help, we can educate doctors to recognize symptoms much earlier in the course of the disease. So PLEASE get those forms off your coffee table and in the mail!! God Bless and Happy Thanksgiving! Jackie

Comments about the web site: Sadly, our family found we had joined the ranks of people who have lost a dear family member to this deadly and vicious disease. Our dear son Matthew was taken from us in a matter of hours inspite of the desparate actions taken by the doctors who attended him. A beautiful light was taken from this world when we were told he had died on the operating table. We will e mail and give you his story. Regards, Diana

Comments about the web site: MY DIABETIC MOTHER AT 74 YEARS OLD CONTRACTED NF IN JULY 1997 THROUGH AN INFECTED HAIR FOLLICLE IN HER RIGHT LEG. AFTER ENDURING SIX SURGERIES IN FIVE WEEKS, LOSING MOST OF THE MUSCLE IN HER UPPER RIGHT LEG, LOSING MASSIVE TISSUE IN HER LEG AND GROIN, SEVERAL SKIN GRAFTS AND TWO MONTHS IN THE HOSPITAL, SHE "SURVIVED". SHE IS NOW IN A NURSING HOME WITH MANY HEALTH PROBLEMS. WE ARE GLAD TO FIND THIS INFORMATION AND TO KNOW THAT OTHERS HAVE SURVIVED. AFTER LEARNING MORE ABOUT NF MY FAMILY AND I ARE AMAZED THAT SHE DID SURVIVE SUCH A MASSIVE, INVASIVE INFECTION. WE WERE TOLD IF SHE HAD GONE ANOTHER 8 HOURS OR LESS SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN DEAD. IT IS A HORRIBLE, HELPLESS EXPERIENCE TO WATCH. BLESS YOU ALL WHO HAVE LIVED THROUGH THIS.
