Scott Cowger
February 26, 1972 - October 14, 2009

My husband Scott Cowger cut his pinky finger while working on his car on Father's Day 2009. By the time we got to the ER his hand was swelling. An x-ray showed large amounts of air & gas, so he was transported to a trauma hospital where he had several surgeries and lost his pinky finger. After nearly a month of hospitalization, he was home for about a month before going back, that time he lost his ring finger. After returning home again, he was back in within a week. Even though he was on IV antibiotics, he died suddenly on October 14, 2009. The doctors told us he had an infection and they called it necrotizing fasciitis, but they never told us it was a "flesh eating bacteria" and that he could die from it. I was never told how fatal it was until the coroner told me that he would have just kept on suffering. It is a very painful and aggressive bacteria and he suffered greatly from it. We had just married on 01-01-09 and now I have to spend our first year anniversary as a widow. If you are reading this in an attempt to research a diagnosis for yourself or a loved one, STAND STRONG in making the doctors take every step to save the life. I know now that if they had amputated his arm, he would still be here. Be as aggressive as this deadly bacteria is.
