Karsten Pape

July 18, 1968 - December 15, 2006

My brother Karsten, of Wolfsburg, Germany, died of NF on December 15, 2006, at age 38. He left a wife and a son, and a daughter who was born about a month after he passed. He was diagnosed too late, then rushed to the intensive care unit of the nearby university hospital, where he fought for four weeks, all the while kept in an induced coma, during which a team of doctors tried to save his life. He NF had manifested itself in his leg. It is not clear to us how he got this disease, or why he was susceptile to getting it, none of the commonly listed risk factors applied to him. The doctors in the intensive care unit admitted that it had been 7 years sincec they had last seen a case of NF in their hospital.
